Virtual Reality Drone Operator
During 2020, I went full on cyberpunk and wanted to tech up my life more than the years before. I had an idea of using a drone to experience the outside world from the comfort of my own home or vehicle. Now, this was during the pandemic, so it was a feasible thing to do as we weren't allowed access to most public places like we once were.

I decided to buy a drone with VR capabilities. Browsing through my local Wal-Mart, I had limited options. Most drones didn't have an option for VR, so I was stuck buying the only one they had with an app with VR access. I believe it was about $30 USD, so it wasn't the biggest hole in my wallet.

I brought it home and was so happy to take it out of the box and use it. I downloaded the app, charged it up, and waited. Once it was finished charging, I grabbed my smartphone VR headset, went outside and decided to try it out.

One of the first things I noticed was how bad the quality was. Sure, this was a cheap piece of hardware and the camera was putting out 480p SD max. As I was flying it around, the wind kept pushing and pulling the drone in its own direction. It couldn't handle the draft of the Texas summer and the drone ended up flying to the next block on its own.

I decided this thing was too shitty and boxed it back up, deleted the app, and put it away. The next day I took it back to Wal-Mart to return the poor thing. I'm sure there are great drones for what I had in mind, but during the pandemic, I was low on cash and just wanted to experience some fun new hobby. Surely some day I'll get back to it when drones become more affordable or if I find one secondhand.
